It's a good enough read and you won't get bored- but it felt insubstantial in many ways. I feel that we didn't really get to know our main characters in depth, and what we did see wasn't all completely loveable.as someone else stated, the situations in teh book are not believable. A gaming house where all the profits go to charities I kept wondering why the 3 vicar's daughters who inherit it are not interested in making any profit for themselves with it, poor as they are. I don't know if anyone would be willing to work for free, basically. Also in regency England, no way would 3 respectable unmarried females be able to work openly in the establishment and not ruin their reputations.Then with all the earlier discussion between the sisters of keeping their reputations intact, we have our heroine travel with Richard, alone, to his estate for a month so she can redecorate it. It makes no sense that she wouldn't have at least insisted on a female companion to travel and stay with her during that time. Then she so quickly gives up her innocence to him that it just seems silly- especially as how Richard has told her he wanted to marry a lady with a title and not her.The whole subplot with the unknown of bastard boy from Martinique really added nothing at all to the story.The additional subplot of the bullying Lord Bolton and his hatred for Richard also didn't do much for me. It had potential- but just seemed lightly covered by the author- and a little outlandish. Come on, a peer of the realm drawing a dagger and coming after Cassia on the street in front of a crowd of onlookers, 'Psycho'- styleVery ehhh...not that intruiging, not that romantic, but not THAT bad either.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Original -- Good But Not GreatBy M. RondeauIn an interesting regency tale, Cassia Penny is one of three sisters who inherit a gaming hell. Now three pious daughters of a minister wouldn't know anything about how to run one, but if it meant they could remain together after being tossed out of the vicarage, they would combine their individual strengths and set out to turn it into one of the more fashionable gaming houses in Regency England.The youngest sister, Cassia, had a gift for style and good taste, which was a talent that self-made millionaire, Richard Blakely was looking for as he returned home to England and to begin the refurbishment of Greenwood, a rundown estate he'd won from an impoverished Lord. Turning Greenwood into a jewel was but step one of his life's plan, for the former son of a collier, in attracting and marrying a noble lady to grace his home and gain respectability. Having met Cassia before in what could only be termed a battle for a painting in an auction house, she could only feel disdain for the rake who outbid her. Cassia adamantly refused his offer of carte blanche to decorate his estate, so the only way he could convince Cassia to help him was by winning a wager that would grant him 30 days of her services. He brought Cassia into his home to use her expertise in transforming the dilapidated estate, but it would be her honest and forthright manner that would be the key into transforming him into a new and better man!*** This was an interesting and original regency plot featuring three daughters of a minister actually running a gaming house. Unfortunately, the main protagonists, featuring two very stubborn individuals, were hard to warm up to. Cassia was the more stubborn of the two, while Richard who was so focused on what he thought was the culmination of a dream, couldn't focus on the real treasure that was in front of his eyes. While the plot was original and the story touching at times, I found it too inconceivable that after they both openly discussed Richard's plans of marrying the Lady Anne, that a well brought up young woman, daughter of a minister, would sacrifice her virginity without any thoughts or regard of any kind of future with him. The reemergence of an illigetimate son he'd never known was glossed over so quickly it almost felt as thought it were added for word count. I've read and enjoyed many of Ms. Jarrett's previous novels but unfortunately, this is not indicative of the talent I've seen her capable of. --- Marilyn, for [...] ---0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.unfinished businessBy MaggieThis is the first novel I have read by this author, I was enjoying the story very much, however it left some very loose ends, unless there is a sequel planned. Bolton the villain of the story, kidnapped the son of our hero, threatened his life that of our hero while threatening to kill either of them, in front of most of the elegant lords in England, the hero punches him a couple of times and that is the last we hear of the villain. Now this Lord Bolton had tried on several occasions to kill our hero, and it is unlikely that he just got up off the floor disgraced and walked away from this situation as unbalanced as he was, and with all those witnesses to his dastardly deeds no mention was made that he was put in prison or reprimanded in any way. Also nothing was mentioned as to how the hero dealt with Lady Anne her family. Just wish these loose ends had been tied up a bit.See all 6 customer reviews...
