The line drawings are very well done and very pretty. I do wish there might have been a few more designs of the actual characters in the play rather than props, etc. Apart from that little nit, I am happy with the book in other ways.The cover is in black print on white (with elements you can color) with orange foil highlights on the front. Both covers fold out with pretty patterns that you can color if you choose to do so.The story is excerpted with many of the most memorable lines included. There is quite a focus on the end where Romeo and Juliet both die, so it is not a sugar-coated version. It stays true to the actual play.The coloring book has been published by the Doubleday's Books for Young Readers but it is not a child's book. The drawings are intricate and detailed enough for any adult to enjoy.This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing my coloring medium of the paper.78 Storybook designs pages (including several of The Apothecary’s Shelf of herbs and spices)Designs are printed on both sides of the pagePaper is heavyweight, white, slightly smooth, and non-perforated.Sewn Binding so you can remove several pages at a time with loss of any of the design elements by snipping a few threads.Designs merge into the binding area.A good number of designs spread across two pages with essential elements merging into the binding area.My copy of the book did not line up extremely well so that the two-page designs were off by a fraction of an inch.Book can be forced fairly flat by breaking/creasing the spineAlcohol-based markers bleed through slightly on this paper.Water based markers (except for brush end Tombows) left the slightest indistinct shadow on the back of the page. Tombow did not leave a shadow.Gel pens and India ink pens did not bleed through this paper.Colored pencils did well. Using oil and wax based pencils in various brands, I was able to color with light or heavy pigment, layer and blend. I use a pencil style stick blender for my tests. Hard lead pencils did well and did not dent/score through to the back of the page.13 of 13 people found the following review helpful.Excellent Critical EditionBy MsEnglishTeacherI am a high-school English teacher, and have been examining the various versions of electronic versions of Romeo and Juliet for my Kindle Fire. I am looking at readability of the text, quality of explanations, another addtional features, and of course, price.Basic Features: This version features very readable formatting. The lines appear in the correct format (i.e. lines of iambic pentameter), and spaces separate each speaker. There are extensive footnotes, accessable through a link that takes you to a page of footnotes (and an easy to use back to to page link). Line numbers are provided (a very rare feature in electronic version of Shakespeare)!While the Ignatius Critical Edition is one of the pricier editions of Romeo and Juliet at $5.99, it includes several engaging critical essays, ranging in topic from the language and poetry of Shakespeare in the play to film and stage adaptations to love and politics. These critical essays are likely the reason for the pricing.My one complaint is that there are no links to Acts or scenes. The menu features links to the introduction, the critical essays, and the play, but there is no subdivision within the play itself. This, however, can be surmounted with the bookmark feature.Overall, this is one of my favorite e-versions of Romeo and Juliet because of the critical essays and scholarly thought.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Beautiful, beautiful book...By Jill MeyerI've been "collecting" books for my two grandgals - the oldest is only 3 years old - to read when they get a bit older. I saw this book, "Romeo and Juliet" in a magazine article about children's books and bought it, though my gals won't read it - or be read from it - for a few years. But, what a beautiful book! The text is a mixture of Shakespeare's verse with prose and artwork by Lisbeth Zwerger.The story is simplified from the play - down to perhaps a 5 or 6 year old's level - but it interested this ancient gammy. The illustrations are just superb, drawn in a muted color pallet, the art goes brilliantly with the text.I'm not sure the age appropriate for this book because it seems to be appreciated by children through adult. All ages will find something to appreciate about this book. And I think it might be part of a series by Zwerger.See all 937 customer reviews...
