Nancy Mullane has done an incredible job of providing a close-up and personal account of five individuals incarcerated for murder, and the commitment each of them made to changing his thoughts, actions and beliefs in order to become "acceptable" for parole. Unlike most who choose to turn away from such individuals and difficult subjects, Nancy chose to learn first hand from individuals sentenced to life with the possibility of parole, how the process works, and the impact it has on them, their families and loved ones. Few people can truthfully claim going through life without having made a mistake, for which they are truly sorry, and many of us are grateful for not having followed through in a fit of rage on thoughts that could well have resulted in our being incarcerated like these 5 men had we translated them into action. Through this incredible reporting, Nancy demonstrates that reform and redemption can and does take place. My hope is that society will take the time to learn that change and growth can take place, and that we all have a role to play in changing the system.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Makes Heros out of the lifers....and pays little attention the the victims...By Drum SonI heard a radio interview with the author, and decided to purchase the book. The book was not what I thought it was going to be (but I am not exactly sure what I thought it would be). The author appears to have written a book to further her position that almost all people sentenced to "life with the possibility of parole" should be paroled if the parole board finds them fit for parole.... Except that they should be given lots more money, etc., because they have such a hard time adjusting. The book is very one sided, and really doesn't discuss, or interview the families of the victims to see how they feel about the lifers leaving the system.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Unbelievably movingBy CbrownI want to do art therapy with prisoners. I am currently an art therapy grad student. This book was absolutely wonderful. So touching and so motivating. This book perfectly illustrates WHY we need reform programs and rehab options and job opportunities. It's also sad at the same time, so hear about the laws that don't work in favor for the prisoners now and to know they're still in effect in 2016 for the most part. I am hoping to change that. I want nothing more than to help push the reform programs in the prison. These people are human! Amazing. Nancy, I hope you see this. I think this is wonderful. Thank you for doing what you did and putting your fear aside. You are so brave and you have inspired countless numbers of people through this book. Thank you!!!!!See all 62 customer reviews...
