The translation was extraordinary. Although exhaustive descriptions at times, the story was ever engaging and mostly unique. The characters were interesting yet as people, they lacked depth in their maturity surrounding relationships and love.I think the intended theme was aging although it seemed to be underlying versus evident at times. The novel spans 50+ years of the lives of a handful of characters in the Caribbean so while the characters passed through many of life's stages, aging and their version of love seemed to be timeless. The theme that interested me the most was cholera and correspondingly Dr. Juvenal Urbino as he treated cholera patients and fought to eradicate it after his father's death.Mid-to-late 19th century, 200,000+ people died of cholera in the Caribbean; Jamaica, Cuba and Barbados lost many lives. Cholera hit the poor much more than the wealthy. Cholera had a 50% mortality rate and was primarily due to lack of good sanitation. Death was quick and brutal. Sadly and ironically, those helped by doctors frequently died. Enter Dr. Urbino and his crusade to eradicate it.I loved the initial 50 pages or so about Dr. Urbino, his parrot and Jeremiah de Saint Amour's suicide by cyanide on a premeditated day, at age sixty. After his death, we learn of de Saint-Amour's longtime lover and discreet relationship.I believed the story would follow this path and unravel it all for us. It does not and in fact it was related to the "love" and aging theme but when it was over, it was over.Soon after Saint-Amour's suicide, Dr. Urbino falls from a ladder to his death trying to rescue his parrot from a tree. The focus then turns to Florentino Ariza, an old acquaintance of Fermina Daza. Fermina was Dr. Urbino's wife of 50 years. While Florentino was pining away for Fermina during her 50 years of marriage to Dr. Urbino, he had (and was journaling the experiences for a book) 622 sexual trysts with various women (single and married) as well as young underage girls. Oh how he loved a few of them. Really Even though his reputation was well known in the community he seemed unaffected by it. His concept of love and lack of respect for women made him a disgusting character and one that I did not want to see succeed in the end. But, oh! The allure of a charming, handsome man! Was Florentino obsessed Yes, I believe so. Not truly in love. I didn't find his pattern of behavior supporting any kind of understanding of love. The only evidence of potential real love I found was the love that eventually grew between Dr. Urbino and Fermina but at the same time I question whether Fermina ever really loved anyone. Perhaps Jeremiah de Saint-Amour and his discreet lover's relationship was about love. There was just not enough there to know. Did Fermina and Florentino with age and independence come to know true love The author would like you to believe that.Putting aside all character judgements, it was a five star read for me. My interpretation of obsession versus true love is not mainstream among readers and reviewers who saw it as a romantic love story. Perhaps the author's version of Love in a Time of Cholera was intended to reflect the times and the culture of the time. The women were bold and baudy and men lost their respect for women. Above all, it is a wonderful piece of literature that could be read many times to truly appreciate the beautiful writing and complexity. Very thoughtful work.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Four StarsBy Robert PennellExcellent support to the book itself.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Best study guide on the marketBy Maggie StevensIt's better than the others on the market. I really found it extremely valuable. My only critique would be that I wish the author of the guide had answered the "Suggested Essay Questions." Other than that, it's very good.Another great study guide from GradeSaver!See all 3 customer reviews...
