An enchanting book with typical McCall-Smith reflections on life today. It's an easy read, yet as always thought provoking. It's the way McCall-Smith puts into words those instants of life which are often thought, but not easily verbalized, which provide delight and sparks of insight into life as it is today. An enjoyable read.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. For train lovers and also romance loversBy NonaIt is about trains and lovers as evident from the name. Alexander McCall Smith weaves his novel around four travelers in a train. He unveils four love stories which are in some way related to train journeys. The four travelers are from different parts of the world and are traveling to London when the story unfolds. The four main character go down their respective memory lanes. This is what Alexander McCall Smith captures beautifully using words. There is suspension of disbelief necessary to read this. Can four strangers drop all pretenses and share intimate details about their life I am not sure. Luckily, not all the four are open minded and forthcoming. There is a person inside the group who is very shy and his story is told by the author transgressing into the character's mind. The reason might be because that character's love story is not conventional and the author wants to play on the suspicion of the character towards the external world. What I mentioned above actually works for the book. Alexander McCall Smith switches between the conversation of these four people and also what goes through their minds. While switching to the conversation happening in their minds, the author gives us many philosophical gems. These gems are written so poetically and simplistically which makes the reader pause to absorb these mostly in the context of one's own experience. This is indeed the best part of the book. The author deliberately does not tie up all the stories to give a perfect ending which has different effect on different readers. Sometimes, you keep the book down with the feeling of an unfinished journey. It was the effect on me. I agree these are four strangers sharing some intimate moments. But I would also like to have a closure. If you are into trains and romance, give it a try. You will definitely like everything except the ending.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.I so wanted to love the book, but...By LoveToReadGoodBooksThis book held so much promise! The ending fell just short enough of perfect to drop it into a 3 star rating.Four different people find themselves together on a long train ride. To pass the time, they tell their stories to each other. Each story is unique, rich in texture and character. The author is adept at introducing them. As a reader, the time passes nicely. I'm interested, patiently engaged, and enjoying the journey in general while I wait for the stories to cross in some way. Then, suddenly, the train comes to a stop and so does the story weaving. I'm left with a sense of incompleteness. When the four passengers go their separate ways, it felt like their stories had been cut short, unfinished in the telling. Where was the thread throughout What was the point Where was the story arc What was the connection They were all missing, as if left on the seat behind me.I could frame that as literary poetry, conducive to the circumstances of the setting that the train had arrived at its final destination. But it doesn't change the fact that the ending felt like it fizzled out prematurely and took away from my satisfaction of having completed the journey of reading the book. This is the second time I've read "Trains and Lovers". It was sitting on my Kindle and I had the time to read so opened it back up. I looked at the notes I made the first time, and they weren't stellar. I shrugged my shoulders and thought, "Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind when I read it the first time." I'm left with the same impression once again. From where I'm sitting, if you aren't looking to be emotionally pulled into a story or the characters, and you want to simply pass the time without having to think or feel, much like eavesdropping on someone else's conversation, then this book is perfect for you. If you're in the mood to read because you want to take an emotional journey, rather than observe life passively through the window, then this isn't the right choice of books for you right now.See all 219 customer reviews...
