The setting is Portugal in the early 1900s. Oriana is one of the Sea People (like a mermaid) and a reluctant spy, though reasonably happy working for Isabel.Oriana and Isable dress as maids to make their escape, which is unfortuante, because a mysterious group has been abducting and killing maids as part of some mysterious dark magic. Oriana and Isabel are caught in this group’s aquatic trap. But Oriana cannot be killed by drowning, and Isabel is too important to be missed for long.Oriana wants to find who killed her employer and why. This is complicated because she’s not exactly human, she’s not supposed to be in the city at all. Simply going to the police isn’t an option. She does manage to befriend and start working for Duilio Ferreira, a well-off gentleman with secrets of his own, who dabbles in police investigation.Together they uncover a plot much bigger than a few missing maids. They also begin to fall in love, though any relationship seems impossible, given Oriana’s status.I found The Golden City extremely enjoyable. It’s a little hard to nail down the genre, but to me it felt like an Urban Fantasy, where the “Urban” part happens to be 1902 Porto. The characters were all distinct and very likable. The setting was *fantastic* and the prose was lovely and easy to read. There were also a lot of clever, interesting touches. I especially liked the roving older Portugese gentlemen who would come to the aid of ladies in social distress, or scold people for gossiping. ;)This story in this book is complete, though it’s clear there are sequels coming. My only caution would be: if you’re looking for hardcore romance, the relationship between the characters remains very polite through this book, though they have unacted-on feelings for each other. I’m sure the relationship will progress in sequels.Highly recommended!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Love the World BuildingBy Karwyn4.5 StarsI love finding new authors, that are exceptional at crafting a story, especially when those authors are historical urban fantasy authors. The world of urban fantasy/ fantasy/paranormal, is crowded with books; most center around the romance or it’s characters; and I do love a good romance. It seems to be a trend to focus mostly on the romance and leave the world building, as an after thought. Then you get those authors who focus on building an intricate world, and never have the characters connect on an emotional level. In Golden City by J. Kathleen Cheney, you have a fantastic novel that blends unique world building, mystery, sea folk and early twentieth century Portugal. Most historical urban fantasy novels center around the British Isles, France or Italy; it is so refreshing that Cheney has centered her world in Portugal. The setting is not the only unique and remarkable aspect of her debut novel. As the characters are all charming, and well formed in the book. Not one of the characters in the story, no matter how briefly they appear is a place filler. They have all been fleshed out, and given strong back stories, which places Cheney among the really fantastic writers in her genre. As the really good authors know we readers what a complete, well rounded story; with characters we will not forget. Cheney has accomplish all of this in Golden City.The world is a simple in it’s understanding but complex in where the magic and other supernatural beings that inhabit it, and how they and the fear of them impact the world around them. The world that Cheney has built is one of a divided Portugal, the north is more conservative; wishing to remain the status quo, wanting to keep forward progress at bay. The southern region is liberal and progressive, and it is the division of the country that took Portugal from a world power to one where it has been stunted in its progress.Set against this back drop is a murder mystery involving a spy, Oriana Parades, from a neighboring country and a gentleman sleuth, Duilio Ferreira, trying to unravel the murder mystery, and what it means for the world. Oriana, is one of the sea folk and when she is involved in the mystery; the smartest thing would have been for her to walk away as she risks exposure in investigating the mystery. She is a smart, and loyal character, and that is why she doesn’t walk away. She get embroiled in the mystery even deeper, when she does join forces with Duilio. Both Duilio and Oriana, are complimentary characters to each other, and their intellect is what sets them up as the perfect pair. The pacing of the story and romance in this first book of the story I found just right, as their is no instant love between the two, or even instant trust; as these two characters grow to trust each other as the story progresses. I was engaged with the story from the start and the author kept me on the edge of my seat until the final page. Not every plot twist and turn is solved in this first book and I immediately bought book two The Seat of Magic wanting more.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Oh, the fishmanity!By Tex ThompsonI'm sorry, I can't. I don't have any clever hook to put here. I just absolutely love this book.More specifically, I love Oriana.Most-specifically, I did not realize until now how monstrously thirsty I was to see a heroine – hell, a character of any gender – who is what I can only call "dauntlessly plain." Like, she's perfectly intelligent, but not a genius. She's not "feisty". She's not snarky, or witty, or gorgeous-but-doesn't-know-it. She's not even fearless – and with good reason, because there's plenty for her to be afraid of here. Her only superpower, if you want to call it that, is her refusal to quit: somebody has killed her mistress, and now there's nothing for it but to smooth her skirts and go after them.Oh, and also she's a sereia, with some awesomesweet fish-lady powers. That's neat too.But honestly, I would have loved this book just as much even if it had been straight-up historical fiction, because the characters are just so unrelentingly SOLID. Oriana and Duilio and 95% of the minor characters are good, thoughtful, sensible people, the kind who have the wisdom and emotional maturity to understand when others have their best interests at heart, and reciprocate their trust. And that's what keeps a classic trope from becoming a cliche. There are past tragedies, but they're not treated as Torturous Dark Secrets. There's slowly growing interest/attraction between the two leads, but no "what is this sudden fire in my loins" insta-love. There are human characters with human limitations, but nobody has to be an irrational idiot to make the plot work.And like... maybe it's just cuz I'm reading from the perspective of a writer, but I can't tell you how much I admire that. It takes absolute, iron-clad skill and confidence to do what Cheney has done here. To spend your whole first chapter with nothing more dramatic than a pair of women packing clothes and counting petticoats – and yet make it an important, compelling scene. To craft a relationship strong enough that neither character needs to go into dramatics to keep it interesting. To take the "every protagonist must have a crucial flaw" rule and snap it over your knee.Anyway, I know no book is perfect, and I'm sure there are legitimate nits to pick somewhere in here, but frankly I don't care enough to go looking for them. The characters in this book have all of what I love most about the people in my own life – grace, grit, compassion, and maturity – and, as in my own life, my only real regret is that I didn't get to know them sooner.See all 56 customer reviews...
