I actually saw the movie "The Heiress" with Olivia deHaviland and Montgomery Cliff, and this is the story that movie is based on. It also was remade as "Washington Square" with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ben Chaplan. It's the story of a poor rich girl in late 1800 New York. Shy and reclusive Catherine, her successful and demanding Father, and the "New kid in town" , Morris Townsend. Henry James weaved a fascinating tapestry of relationship dynamics into this tale. Very well developed and multi-dimensional story telling. I loved it.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.Four ghostly tales from the master of obsessionBy PattoObsession is the theme of these stories, and nobody portrays it better than Henry James. The protagonists include a man obsessively devoted to his dead friends, a man obsessed with what his life would have been if he'd taken another path, a man obsessed with an idee fixe that some terrible doom awaits him, and a woman obsessed with combating an elusive Evil.In these tales, James’s bizarrely exquisite style, still echoing the nineteenth century, contrasts beautifully with his totally modern preoccupation with anguished states of mind.The stories are fascinating, replete with ambiguities and tormented introspection. And the introduction adds greatly to the pleasure of reading them. I'd suggest reading the intro after the stories so as not to spoil any delicious Jamesian shocks and twists.Editor Kimberly Reed gives an informative summary of James's life and explores how James's personal experiences reverberated in his fiction. She points out that in James’s stories, the familiar becomes strange, the comfortable distresses, and what is repressed will out. I found insights like these enlightening.Reed describes the literary controversies that burned for a century over The Turn of the Screw, fueled by James's devilish ambiguities.In analyzing all the tales, she considers intriguing questions: Did James's sexual neuroses manifest in these stories Were his ghost stories intellectual conundrums rather than terrifying tales Were the Dead indeed his all-pervading inspiration When ghosts appear, are they realThis Broadview edition also includes a lot of supplementary material that students and readers with a scholarly bent will appreciate. But most important of all, the editor's insightful analyses of the tales help the reader catch all of James's devious nuances.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Gothic AmbiguityBy SassyPantsThis 91 page novella is perfect for a crisp fall day. The Turn of the Screw was written in 1898 and presented as a serial. I remember reading it in high school and wanted to revisit it.It is a challenge to describe the plot without spoilers, but I will try. An unnamed young governess is hired by a man to take care of his young orphaned niece and nephew. Her only instruction is not to contact the uncle at all. The governess accepts the position at Bly, a large and well-appointed country home. There are a few staff and the niece Flora. The governess is captivated by the goodness of Flora. Her brother Miles is at boarding school, but is suddenly expelled and sent home with no explanation. She finds Miles to be an exceptionally good child as well and cannot imagine that he did anything wrong. The governess begins to see apparitions. She discovers that she is seeing a former handyman and former governess, who were having an affair. They are both since deceased. It becomes clear to her that the ghosts are communicating with the children and the children welcome the relationship. The seemingly innocent children go to great lengths to do the bidding of the ghosts. Disturbing things happen as the governess tries to save the children.If you like your stories to have a neat and tidy plot and ending, this is not the book for you. Many aspects of the story are unclear, including the motives of the ghosts and the children. It is possible that the governess is insane and there are no ghosts. Personally, I think this is a better ghost story because you are left to wonder. It is more chilling not to have things explained. My only quibble with the book is the writing. Even taking time period into account, the sentences are clunky and cumbersome. I was never able to get into the rhythm of James' writing.
