It might be wished that greater detail of the archaeological work was presented, but that would undoubtedly interfere with the authors' desire to create a book to introduce relative novices to the subject, a goal admirably achieved, placing the Trojan War solidly in both history and literature/legend. Although primarily geared towards the student still new to Homer and ancient Greece, the book nonetheless has much to offer those of us with considerable knowledge in the area, as it very capably surveys the ever-developing story of what happened in western Anatolia in that period and lays out the main lines of continuing inquiry. A number of primary source documents, including relevant Hittite clay tablet texts are included in an appendix.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.not worth the buyBy Paolo Ferabolithe book is extremely short, and targets a very elementary audience. only the first 100 pages constitute the actual text. the rest are appendices.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.A fresh look at an eternally fascinating subject.By Albert A. NofiA Summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:'Standing on the cusp between myth, legend, and history, the Trojan War continues to attract attention. In this work, the authors review the current state of the evidence on this major event in the formation of what would become Western civilization. They open with a look at “Troy” or, at rather, the city under the mound at Hissarlik, within the Late Bronze Age. There follows an account of the mythic and traditional histories of the city and the war, if there was one, a look at what can be learned from the Homeric epics, and how this tradition and archaeology have shaped views of the events to the present. The book concludes with an overview of the current state of thought on the subject. Well written, wide ranging, touching upon art, science, literature, history, and more, often analytical and insightful, this will prove a very good read for anyone with even a slight interest in history.'For the full review, see StrategyPage.ComSee all 6 customer reviews...
