I didn't know it could get worse.I've been waiting for Skyler and Dmitri's book for nearly 20 books now... At least since Gabriel's story when we first met them and realized they were lifemates. I can't believe that after all this time and all the build up to their storyline, THIS is the treatment they get. Maybe it's because of Skyler's age but this book reads like a racy YAF-type book. If I was asked to describe it, I'd say it's more about the potential Lycan-Carpathian war than it is about Skyler and Dmitri. It is palpably obvious that this sange-rau/Han- ku-whatever theme is being dragged out for the trilogy. This book spent most of the time dealing with this issue and to no effect, no significant progress was made from Fen's book and we didn't even get another party to show off all the cute Carpathian kiddies.I've been so excited anticipating this book, I even pre-ordered it and kept checking from midnight release day whether it had loaded up on my kindle. I have to say I'm disappointed. Obviously this is readable because it's Christine Feehan but it also feels really disjointed, rushed and has lost the basic thing the author is awesome at- writing about the healing power of love for a damaged hero/heroine. This book to me was mostly spells, chants, all those things that the author has gotten more into the last 10 or so books. I could have done with fewer pages of Skyler's mage spells and a little more of her and Dmitri's romantic relationship.Where this book shines is the times Sky and Dmitri are together. His consideration, understanding and love for her and her willingness to sacrifice her life for him. I think one thing a lot of people wondered about was how she would deal with the intense sexual relationship between lifemates given her past and it is certainly something she and Dmitri discuss in this book but the resolution is rather rushed, understandable given that we're treated to pages upon pages of spells, battles and diplomatic negotiation. Another place this book shines is in Skyler's interactions with Josef and Paul both of whom I absolutely love. Sure she reads as rather young in these but she IS only 19 (even though at times she seemed a little younger than this like maybe fifteen or so ;) ).My main complaint with this book is the same as my main complaint with the previous book, Fen's book. This is not a story about Skyler and Dmitri, it's a story featuring them that is about a potential war. It's an action adventure type book with romantic elements. My second major complaint is that I'm beginning to feel like the story arch is being deliberately stretched out to fit round a trilogy or something. This isn't new. The De La Cruz vs Malinov storyline lasted several books as well but you felt like each one could stand alone with a beginning and end and each one had a distinct plot and angle and identifiable lead characters so no one was being shortchanged and it didn't feel like one continuous book split into several parts. These last 2 books, particularly this one, aren't standalones. As far as I'm concerned, this book could have ended a quarter of the way through once Dmitri was rescued for all the progress that was made the remaining three-quarters of the book because the rest of the book just sets up Zev and Bronnie's book (and hopefully the conclusion of this unnecessarily long-drawn out Sange Rau madness).I'll get the next book because I'm a sucker for Feehan and want to see how all this ends. But I really wish she could go back to more of a character relationship focus in her books because that is where they shine. I don't mind a little action and adventure or even chants and recitations since this has become "a thing" the last 10 or so books , this is after all, the dark series with mages and things that go bump in the night, but it shouldn't take the place of the relationships and romance that I think drew a lot of people to this series in the first place.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. What an utter disappointment.By penashI followed the Dark Series avidly for a really long time. Eventually, I pulled away from it because it just kept droning on and on without even coming close to a resolution. I love the Carpathians...not so much a fan of adding all of the other supernatural elements into it. It's just adding weird on top of weird for the sake of being weird. Now, as for Dark Wolf...I returned to the series specifically to read about Dmitri and Skyler. I was looking forward to their story for YEARS. I could not have possibly been more disappointed by this book. I feel that Ms. Feehan is so wrapped up in creating this drama between the Lycans and Carpatians (Underworld, anyone) that she's ignoring her character's relationships with each other. This just seemed like a bookmark in between two larger, non-romantic, stories. What I used to love about the Dark Series is the attention Ms. Feehan used to give the individual stories. Sure, they are made in a specific chronological order, but it used to be that you didn't HAVE to read them in order to be able to follow along...the stories within the book were compelling enough to fill in the blanks. The magic that used to be there has been forgotten.124 of 131 people found the following review helpful.Better than I expectedBy Jen (Red Hot Books)Fans of Christine Feehan’s Dark series have been waiting a decade or so for this book. For some, there is no way anything she were to write would satisfy after a build like this. Others will be so glad to get the story, that it will be an automatic 5 star read. I’ll be honest, I went into this one with my expectations at an all-time low. The past few books have been so disappointing that I was ready to quit the series. Until I found out that Skyler and Dmitri were finally on the horizon. I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. As the story begins, Dmitri is in the custody of the Lycans. He is being tortured for being a mixed blood. None of the Carpathians can find him. In fact, Skyler doesn’t even think they are looking. So she teams us with her friends Josef and Paul for a rescue mission. Let me stop here and share a few thoughts right off the bat. Skyler is one powerful young woman. She is also smart, resourceful, and determined to save her man. I loved that. But what I loved even more is that Dimitri accepted that. Of course, he wanted her to stay safe, but unlike most Carpathian males, he did not forbid her assistance. He was worried for her, but he listened to her. He respected her need to help him and her ability to be smart about it.Back to the story. Dimitri is really messed up…. like, almost dead. Yet he never succumbs. He fights to live for Skyler. And about the first third of the book is tied up in his rescue. From then on, it’s about healing and dealing with the increasing tensions between the Carpathian and Lycan people. Tension, that could boil over into a war.The plot was fairly good. But the best thing this book had going for it was the romance and its key players. Dimitri is everything you could want in a Carpathian man. He is strong and powerful without ever being an alpha-hole. He is patient and kind to his young lifemate. He loves her unconditionally and –here’s something unusual– he respects her. He never berates her; never makes her feel foolish or less than him in any way. His care and generosity don’t ever make him look weak, either. He’s easily one of the best heroes the series has seen. Their love story is gentle and sweet. I believed in their feelings for one another. There’s no real internal conflict, just the two of them banding together to survive the threats against their lives and their people. The supporting cast is a who’s-who of the series. From Gabriel and Francesca, to Lucian and Darius, Zacharias, Nicolas, Razavan, Ivory, Byron, Mikhail… almost everyone is here. I loved catching up with old characters and getting to know more about the “next generation” that includes Josef and Paul. The whole book felt like a homecoming in a way.It wasn’t perfect, mind you. The “spells” Skyler cast got on my nerves to no end. The chanting and rhyming have GOT TO GO. I also had a gripe about how the story dealt with the sex. Such a fine point has been placed on Skyler’s sexual abuse in the past. It was the big stumbling block to her accepting Dimitri as a lifemate. Yet, when it’s time for these two to get horizontal, it was way too easy. It was like she just decided she was over being raped and passed around in the sex trade for years. She decides she is over it and everything is fine. True, there is a point later in the book where she has a moment of fear, but it’s really small potatoes considering her history –and considering the build-up.And speaking of the sex, I have two other observations. One, I stand by the last review where I said I think Feehan has a ghost-writer for her sex scenes. They are unrecognizable from the earlier books. I mean, I almost fell out of my chair when Dimitri referenced his c**k. And two, that flower ritual is just damn stupid.Overall, I was satisfied with book, and pleasantly surprised. I think most Carpathian fans will be too.See all 1346 customer reviews... Browse By Title: A - Project Gutenberg Aamun miehi: Historiallinen kuvaelma (Finnish) by Wilkuna Kysti.
